After last season’s Adolf Loos -inspired collection, today Eudon Choi continued his architectural exploration showing a spring 2018 collection influenced by the modernist designer Eileen Gray, specifically her E-1027 house. All clean lines and geometric shapes, this season Eudon took it one step further with a collaboration with the New York based jeweller Chris Habana, on a range of earrings that cleverly draw from the architectural framework.

Although friends for years it was only after randomly bumping into each other during Paris fashion week that Eudon and Chris got chatting about working on something together.

'We looked at the furniture that Eileen Gray had,' explains Eudon post-show. 'She had this glass table with a metal frame that I really liked so we played around with design element of that.'

'Eudon was very specific,' laughs Chris. 'He wanted to see how the chair could be translated into jewellery in different ways. It really works with my own signature style. It's silver, pristine and clean.'

With Eudon based in London and Chris in New York, the pair spent a lot of time sending sketches and renderings back and forth over e-mail. The results are a collection of face framing earrings, with a series of intertwined loops and oval shapes that gently reference Gray's iconic table. Many of the earrings don't require another trip to the piercing studio, instead they are designed to be placed over the top of the ear or as a cuff.  'A lot of what we do is not pierced,' says Chris. 'It's either placed on the conch or over the ear. I like to think we are forming a new category of earrings and a new style in the ear game.'

When it comes to ear trends, Chris is one to listen to. It was him that got everyone contemplating septum piercings after Rihanna DM-ed personally to request one and then a couple of weeks later wore it on the front of i-D magazine. Plus, his previous collabs with Opening Ceremony, Prabal Gurung and Hood by Air were all snapped on the major street style set. So what does he think is next? 'What we pride ourselves on is we do the unexpected. We brought the septum trend into the market. After Rihanna wore it it went everywhere so I think the conch style which we showed today is really going to take off.' As for why earrings are having an it moment, Chris thinks it comes down to Instagram. 'I think people really want to focus on the face. Everyone is taking pictures of themselves. And with earrings what people like is that you can play with them. You can do different pairings and different styles and shapes. That's where the excitement comes from.'

Luckily for those who can't wait to adorn themselves, the Eudon Choi X Chris Habana collection is available to buy now.
